The second Haifa District Environmental and Sustainability Conference in MadaTech

On Thursday, February 2nd 2010, the second Haifa District Environmental and Sustainability conference was held in MadaTech – The Israel Museum of Science, Technology and Space. More than 400 teachers and educators took part in workshops, tours and lectures arranged by Haifa District of The Ministry of Environmental Protection, Haifa District of The Ministry of Education, Haifa Municipality, Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael, MadaTech and The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel.
For Tomorrow
“Educators - head masters, teachers and kindergarten teachers responded so wonderfully to the conference that it warms the heart, and shows that the values of protecting the environment were truly assimilated in Haifa, in a beautiful way. For Education
The conference was held after a growing demand made by teachers and educators for educational tools which will help protect the environment and values of sustainability as part of educational values. The conference mainly addressed global warming and its’ consequences in preparation for a green school community.

For society
In the center of the conference stood a number of lectures:
MK Dov Khenin: A global Challenge – local coping.
Dr. Salit Ron, Education - Ramat Hanadiv: From the ecological footprint to the hand print.
Dr. Tal Berman, MadaTech curator, A report from UNESCO about global warming and climate change.
The participants were welcomed by Shlomo Katz - Haifa district manager in The Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection, Zivit Linder, head of education department in The Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection, Sara Dar - Haifa District Science Inspector in The Ministry of Education and Dr. Ronen Mir - MadaTech CEO.
For The Enviornment
During the conference different activities and tours were held, among them visiting the “Green Energy” exhibition in MadaTech, touring the kishon estuary and a veriety of workshops: The blue box, environmental quality in tradishional literary sources, glass recycling, enviornmental education and coexistence in schools, Biological variety in the forest and the thicket and the show “Dr. Molecule Gaurds the Enviornment”.
For The Future
The conference presented inviormental initiatives by education instituts, green orginizations, companies and initiators in the field of environmental quality, sustainability and enviornmental education.
For Humanity
The conference took place at MadaTech who was included in ACCENT project which promots activities about climatic changes using different tools, involvement and social and business networking. The project runs in the Europian Union and has 15 organizations and museums from Israel and Europe take part in it.
The partners meet regularly in order to discuss ways to deal with important issues like climate changes and the opening event of the project was held during Cop 15 - The world climate changes conference held in Copenhagen. This year, the ACCENT project is dealing with defying strategies for raising public awarness and encouraging citizen to take an active part in dealing with climate changes through dialog and action. MadaTech’s conference is one of the ways of fulfilling and achieving these goals.
